International Peace Day: Cultivating a Culture of Peace

Peace is more than just the absence of conflict. It’s that quiet sense of calm, a feeling of safety and inner balance, both within ourselves and in our communities. We can nurture it in our daily lives by showing kindness, apologizing when we’re wrong, and building understanding with those around us. These small, simple gestures can create peace in our relationships. On a bigger scale, peace means living in a world without war, where nations and communities coexist with mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation

International Peace Day

On 21 September, We celebrate International Peace Day to promote and recognize the importance of peace globally. The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly to 'commemorate and strengthen the ideals of peace within and among all nations and peoples.' It aims to build unity and value peace and non-violence across the world. It highlights issues like inequality, poverty, and human rights, which are often the root causes of conflict. Ultimately, Peace Day emphasizes the need for collective action toward lasting peace.

The Purpose of International Day of Peace

Peace has an impact on every aspect of our life. We want to build a peaceful world where we live our lives selflessly, treating others with respect and sharing the extra that comes to us, where there is no competition, conflict, imperialism, racism, and nationalism, which can turn a land into a battlefield and make a miserable life for not only human being but also every breathing creature. The Peace Day focuses on transforming how we treat one another and our environment. When millions of people are aware of the importance of peace, they make these kinds of efforts, and their collective impact can create meaningful change. Each of us has the power to contribute to a more peaceful world. Only, we can say that peace means living our lives selflessly, treating others with respect, and sharing the extra that comes to us with others who have been shortchanged.

2024 Theme: Cultivating a Culture of Peace

Every year, the United Nations chooses a theme for the International Day of Peace, each with unique significance. The 2024 theme, “Cultivating a Culture of Peace,” is more relevant than ever. Amid rising geopolitical tensions and conflict

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of the Culture of Peace initiative. In 2024, the theme reinforces values like respect for life, human rights, and non-violence. Amid rising global conflicts, it emphasizes peaceful conflict resolution, education, dialogue, and cooperation. Key principles such as justice, democracy, tolerance, and cultural diversity must be upheld across all societies. As tensions rise, it’s crucial to revisit these values to foster peace, understanding, and solidarity worldwide.

The quota reform movement in Bangladesh also serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight for fairness and justice. Students led the charge, challenging the unfair quota-based recruitment system and advocating for a merit-based process. Their movement grew to reflect the rights of all citizens, standing against inequality. The International Day of Peace calls us to remember these struggles and our responsibility to work for a fairer, more peaceful world—whether through individual actions or broader efforts to tackle conflict and inequality.
